Lorenzo LaRoc Kicks off Hispanic Heritage Month

Students were able to enjoy the sounds of the electric violin as played by Lorenzo LaRoc in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month on September 15. You might know LaRoc from his performances down under (in the subway). He is an incredible musician that we are fortunate to have on campus. You can check him out at his website.

Fall Club Fair

The Fall Club Fair was held on Thursday, September 17 in the lobby of the Atrium Building. The event was very well attended by students and many clubs were represented. It was a great way for many clubs to recruit members and to show off their accomplishments. Below are some of pictures of the participants.

President's Leadership Summit for Student Leaders

Over 55 students attended the 4th Annual Presidents Summit for Student Leaders on Friday, October 17. The Summit was held at the Brooklyn Bridge Marriott. The day provided an opportunity for students to hear from President Hotzler and to engage in dialogue. Also speaking at the summit was Professor Reginald Blake who spoke about the principles of being a good leader, and Alexis Chaconis, director of Admissions, presenting information about opportunities for study abroad. Ms. Chaconis was joined by Johanna Silfa a former study abroad student.

Students were joined at lunch by members of the City Tech leadership team including vice presidents and deans. This was a highlight for many of the students.

One student's comment was "that the experience makes me feel like I'm a part of the
change instead of feeling like change is being forced upon me."

A celebration of music and food was the finale of Hispanic Heritage Month at City Tech. The event featured the music of YeraSon 8 piece Charange Orquestra and healthy latin food alternatives. Students took advantage of salsa dance lessons that were given at the beinging of the event. Several others joined in as the band offered great salsa music. The event was co-sponsored by the Office of Student Life and Development and the Student Wellness Office.

To celebrate the release of the October issue of the New Tech Times the staff held a music session in the Voorhees Building. It is exciting to see a student group reaching out to students in Voorhees Building. It is often forgotten in their programming efforts.

Walk the Walk, Talk the Talk Event

Today the Student Life Office co-sponsored a fitness and voter registration event with the Student Wellness Center. Both departments encouraged students to Talk the Talk, Walk the Walk and Register to Vote before embarking on a stroll across the Brooklyn Bridge. Political awareness paired with wellness awareness made for a great event. Club Fair, September 25

The annual fall Club Fair was held on Thursday, September 25 during City Tech Club hours. Teh event had representatives from several student groups at City Tech. Students were able to talk with representatives from clubs representing academic majors clubs, cultural clubs, spiritual and religious clubs and social clubs. Below are pictures of just a few of the groups that participated. The International Student Club, (pictured above with Ben Oser, Club Coordinator and Sarah Conyers, SGA Vice President) won the contest for the best table display and will be receiving a pizza party valued at $50 from the Student Life office.

Lorenzo LaRoc

Monday marked the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month. In celebration of the occasion we hosted a talented performer, Lorenzo LaRoc. LaRoc is a New York born, Dominican who plays the electric violin, a beautiful instrument crafted from clear Plexiglas. If you are a regular subway rider you may have seen him feature in the "Music Underground" series. This is the first of a number of programs being hosted to celebrate the rich history of Hispanics at City Tech and in New York.

New Student Orientation

New Student Orientation was held on Monday and Tuesday, August 25 and 26, 2008. The successful event was attended by over 1400 students and over 500 parents and family members. This is the largest number of attendees that I have seen. On Tuesday we were forced to use every available seat in the auditorium. This is a great way to start the year.

Kristin Skarie was the featured speaker both days. There were separate programs for the new students and for their families. Students met with faculty and were introduced to the college by the Student Orientation Guides. Parents met with the President, the Provost, the VP for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management and several other representatives from various offices.

Student Government members hosted a dinner with Kristin Skarie, motivational speaker and leadership trainer on Monday night. Krisitin is part of the Teamworks group and was in New York to present at City Tech New Student Orientation

The students had a very enjoyable conversation with Kristin. Some of the topics included how college student compared throughout the world (she recently traveled to South Africa), the exciting opportunity that the SGA has by being able to work with such a diverse group of students, leadership tips, characteristics of campus politics and how it applies to the world of work and how she started her business.

A highlight for me was when she asked the question "How do you define success?" I think it left all of participates thinking about their personal definitions of success.

On Thursday afternoon the Orientation Guides finished up the preparations for New Student Orientation. Here are a couple pics of them having fun preparing hats and just relaxing for a few minutes. This is a great group of students to work with as they are fun and dedicated to helping new students.

Today was the first work day for a group of great new Orientation Guides. Some are returning and some are brand new and they are all excited. I am excited to have such a great group to work with. Today the guides worked from 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. preparing information packets for new students. They successfully stuffed 2000 information folders and backpacks. It was a very productive day.

After what seemed like a very short summer we are in full swing for the fall academic year. Students do not start classes until Wednesday, August 27 however we are preparing for New Student Orientation, Club Re-certification, and fall programs. Welcome back.

Student Affairs Conference

Members of the Student Life staff attended the City University of New York Regional Student Affairs Conference Friday, May 2 at York College. Vice Chancellor of CUNY Gary Moore, who attended our City Tech President’s Leadership Conference in the fall, was one of many inspirational speakers, stressing the simple - yet not always the case - notion of student affairs being there primarily for students.

Faculty and staff representing City Tech were later able to attend a variety of workshops ranging from emotional intelligence to student leadership and development to the social networking technology information, which focused on the student-friendly networks of facebook and myspace. It was a day dedicated for us to learn, being able to put into action new ideas and perspectives in the hopes of improving student life for all our students, the ideal of student affairs and services at City Tech.

Today's Meet the Candidates Event

City Tech Students were given an opportunity to meet those running for student governance positions for the 08-09 academic year. Ten of the 11 candidates attended the event that was held today from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. on the first floor of the Atrium in the old bookstore space. Student elections will be Monday, April 14-Wednesday, April 16. Students will be able to vote online at www.elexpert.net/votecitytech.

Meet the Candidates

City Tech students will have an opportunity to meet the candidates for several of the position for Student Government Association 2008-2009. All students are invited to join us in the old bookstore on the 1st floor of the Atrium. The candidates will be there from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. to answer your questions and to tell you what they plan to do if elected.

We will also be suppling refreshments for all those who attend.

Student Fee Referendum

Below is the proposed fee referendum that will appear on the ballot.

Do you wish to increase the New York City College of Technology full-time/part-time student activity fee by $6.75/$7.75 representing the following allocation increases: Athletic Program by $2.00/2.00; Day Care by $1.75/$1.75; SGA Operations by $1.00/$1.00; Student Clubs and Activities by $1.00/$1.00; and NYPIRG by $1.00/$2.00? This would increase the full-time fee from $54.55 to $61.30 and the part-time fee from $20.20 to $27.95 per semester.

Student Fee Referendum

There will be a student fee referendum on the ballot next week. The referendum is for a fee increase to the student activities fee. The funds generated would be used to support athletics, childcare, student clubs, SGA and NYPIRG. Currently the City Tech student activities fee is one of the lowest within CUNY and has not been adjusted in 10 years.

I encourage you to check out the referendum so that you may make an informed choice about your vote. The actual wording of the referendum is posted above.
